About the Book

The book is broken into sections, with some history on the Rountree name, followed by Rountree Family Tree Scroll from 1710 through to 1994 taking up the first 20 odd pages.

Then the book focuses on personal memories, photos and accounts from the descendants of Joseph and Mary Rountree (nee Coleman) who lived in Christchurch, New Zealand.

The last part of the book covers Mary Coleman’s family tree, and contributions from the descendants of her siblings, who also emigrated to New Zealand in the early 1900s.  There is also a section about some of the descendants journey’s back to Ireland, and meeting various Irish cousins.

Second Edition Revision

Unfortunately, due to the print costs and technology back in 1994, the published edition contained photocopy quality images. In other words, the images ended up being mostly two tone, with the finder details being very hard to view.

Consequently, we decided to revise the Rountree Coleman Book Vol I book in 2021, while we were working on Volume Two.  You can read more about the updated edition below.

In 2021, the family decided to revise and reprint a second edition. This entailed rescanning the text and photos from the original printer’s proofs. so that some minor mistakes and typographical errors in the text could be fixed. The photos had to be edited (or the originals sourced and scanned) in order to produce viewable images.

The original printer’s proofs were sent to cousin, Deb Donnell, so she could put her professional publishing skills to work. Without getting too technical, this required a significant time and skill investment to convert the printer’s images which had the dot effect used for halftone offset printing. Even with all this photo editing work, the end result isn’t quite as sharp as a scan from original images or negatives would be. Where original images could be sourced, these have been used.

Overall, the print and photo quality has been significantly improved with the revision and reprint. The end result is a high quality 200 pages perfect bound A4 book with a soft cover.

This book is for private family research only.  If you are related to the New Zealand Rountree & Coleman families, and you would like a copy, please contact us.
