I’m feeling overwhelm. In fact, I’m having a hard time today with what is happening in the world regarding Coronavirus. As I search within and without for strength and courage, I remembered seeing this article by Scott Berinato titled “That Discomfit Your Feeling is Grief”. So I thought I’d share it with you. Some key points:
1. Feeling overwhelm is temporary
Yes it feels a bit permanent because of the open-endedness and uncertainty around it. But for survivors of mass trauma events (such as the Christchurch Earthquake), we have learned that eventually, “this too shall pass.” Or as my Mum said when we reached the Museum after leaving the central city on 22 February 2011 “the sun will rise again on us.”
2. It’s okay to feel negative emotions
Are you experiencing Covid 19 Feeling Overwhelm? This includes grief, discomfort, anxiety, overwhelm, stress, anger, and all the other shitty feelings. Well, let me tell you, this is quite normal. So, be gentle and compassionate with yourself as you adjust to this temporary new normal.
3. There is only so much you can control
There is a lot we do not have control over, including government driven decisions about the Alert levels and lockdown, whether or not they’ll actually pay self-employed business owners a wage subsidy, etc. However, I have studied NLP (a branch of self-actualisation psychology) for several years. Therefore, I know that there is also a lot we do have control over. For example, our thoughts, feelings, actions, and communications with others.
Conclusion
So yes, I’m having a hard time today, and that’s okay. Because it’s normal. And it’s temporary. Tomorrow is another day. Plus, I have worked hard over the past few years to develop and build my business. And there’s no way that I’m going to let current events destroy that work or my dreams of a better life and a better world.
